This report is based on a visit to Australia by a team of 13: seven from the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI), a senior manager from Centrica and senior officials from the Department for Education and Skills, the Learning and Skills Council, the Sector Skills Development Agency and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. The purpose of the visit was to gain an understanding of vocational education and training (VET) in Australia, focusing particularly on the development of workplace skills. The specific aims were to: survey the arrangements for VET in the context of the Australian government's policies and priorities and the perceived shortage of workplace skills; review the vocational provision on offer to learners, particularly apprenticeships and traineeships; examine the role of public and private providers in VET and the ways they are responding to the needs of employers; review the funding arrangements and the methods used to assure the quality of the provision; and study the ways in which Australia is addressing the needs of its Indigenous people. The study concluded that the challenge facing VET providers in Australia is broadly the same as in England: to ensure that there are sufficient numbers of skilled people to meet the demands of a modern economy competing in global markets. The 27th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference 'No Frills' was co-hosted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and New Zealand partners, the Industry Training Federation and Ako Aotearoa on 15-17 August 2018. 'No Frills' is a well-known annual national conference where researchers and practitioners in the vocational education and training (VET) sector come together to present, discuss and share information about key issues confronting the sector. By partnering with New Zealand, this year's conference provided an excellent opportunity to highlight international evidence for benchmarking policy best practice. The conference also provided valuable professional development opportunities to enhance research capacity and capability in the VET sector by incorporating activities on data and research analytics, and research practice. The 2018 conference program focused on Skills for a global future: working and learning together.

This third edition in the Digital skills Aotearoa series explores our digital skills landscape in New Zealand and globally. It issues an urgent call to equip Aotearoa New Zealand's workforce with skills for the digital age. The report examines our demand and supply mismatch, where the greatest unmet demand is for senior workers with specific advanced digital skills and experience. Generally, these roles cannot be filled by graduates and early-career workers. As a result of this mismatch, many graduates find it difficult to obtain entry-level jobs.

The report also forecasts our future demand, identifying challenges and supply opportunities. To enable Aotearoa's future, the report provides several recommendations. These include a collective response to our digital skills challenge, leadership from our largest employer and the need for industry to prioritise collaborative efforts to address the issue.
