The Department of Training was established on 1 December 1993, following the amalgamation of the former Department of Employment, Vocational Education and Training (DEVET) and the State Employment and Skills Development Authority (SESDA). The Office of Industrial Training is a sub-department of the Department of Training.

The 1995/6 year saw the vocational education and training sector and the Department of Training continue to undergo rapid and fundamental change.
