The 'Grow Your Own' (GYO) Regional Workforce Program enables key local stakeholders and industry representatives to identify workforce needs and plan what skills are required to meet the needs of their sector and support their region's economic goals. Under round one of the program, four regional industries will benefit from support and funding: the food and beverage manufacturing sector in Bundaberg; the forestry sector in Wide Bay; the maritime, marine and aviation sectors in Cairns; and the water sector in Far North Queensland.

Through an industry-led approach, Jobs Queensland has partnered with Timber Queensland to establish local solutions that provide a pathway forward specifically for the forest and timber industry in the Wide Bay region. Implementing the actions within this plan will support the region's forest and timber industry in maximising opportunities to its future state by considering existing workforce supply, workforce demand, existing business capability and future skills needs.

Jobs Queensland's Anticipating Future Skills data suggests that the Wide Bay region is projected to experience the fastest increase in employment in Queensland. Thirty-seven actions across four key themes will guide the Wide Bay region's forest and timber industry towards its future state. The four key themes of the plan aim to: (1) improve industry awareness and attraction; (2) grow a healthy training system; (3) build business capability; and (4) develop diversity in people and products.

Jobs Queensland's Future work, future jobs research has identified lifelong learning as a vital workforce response to Queensland's rapidly changing economy. There are immense benefits to be gained from striving for a community that views learning as an essential part of peoples' working lives and which has workplace cultures which value and encourage continual learning.

This report describes a model for enabling and encouraging individuals to adopt a lifelong learning mindset and a rationale for industries and businesses to foster a learning culture in their workplace. It also examines how other countries and parts of the world are successfully building lifelong learning cultures.
