This report, focusing on labour market outcomes, skill development outcomes and system-design outcomes, is based on the statistical analysis of the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) 'longitudinal survey of completing trainees'. It reviews the experience of more than 2000 trainees who began their traineeship in the March quarter of 1996 and concludes that: one year after their traineeships, most trainees appear to have benefited from their traineeships; there were several groups of trainees who fared less well than others; on-the-job training was the most common form of structured training; and in a minority of cases, the system and/or the employers failed to meet the standards expected by the trainees. The chapters are: Introduction; Design of the traineeships; Skill development during traineeship; Labour market outcomes; Study and training outcomes; Conclusions and implications. Also included are three appendices: Longitudinal survey of completing trainees; Further tables; Results from regression analysis.
