Work-based learning occurs in a work environment, through participation in work practices and processes, and is integral to vocational education and training. This approach to learning provides opportunities to achieve employment-related competencies in the workplace and is often undertaken in conjunction with classroom or related learning. Work-based learning can take the form of ‘on-the-job’ training, work placements, work experience, workplace mentoring, instruction in general workplace competencies, and broad instruction in all aspects of industry. This is different to work-integrated learning which usually comprises a range of activities that integrate theory and practice within a university setting.
