Globalisation and increased competition bring many benefits for business, consumers and the economy. However, it can also result in the restructuring of industries not able to compete with changing economic markets. In the past many countries have witnessed restructuring in many high-profile businesses, especially those in the manufacturing industry. In rapidly changing economies where industries are being restructured and occupations are changing, up-to-date skills are vital for employers and workers to meet varying employment demands. There is interest then in the role vocational education and training (VET) plays in mitigating the impacts of industry restructuring on individuals, to ensure they are able to remain part of the labour market if they choose.
