Equity in vocational education and training (VET) is a broad term covering the action of ensuring that everyone has opportunity to successfully gain skills, knowledge and experience. Research in this area focuses on understanding ways to achieve equitable access to VET whilst increasing participation of people who are under-represented and encouraging positive outcomes for graduates. Specific equity groups of disadvantaged people and people facing issues related to social inclusion that are most often targeted in research and post-secondary planning include: Indigenous people, people with disabilities or special needs, people from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB), people of low socioeconomic status (SES), people in correctional institutions and people from rural/remote areas. Other groups that are sometimes considered as disadvantaged include women, older workers, and young (disengaged) people.
Tabatha Griffin is a Senior Research Officer in Research Operations at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).
Tabatha has spent the last 10 years involved in research looking at various aspects of the vocational education and training system, with a particular interest in the participation, outcomes and pathways of disadvantaged learners.
In her role at NCVER, Tabatha is also involved in managing the externally commissioned research program, giving her the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of research on equity-related challenges in the VET sector. She uses this intelligence to highlight where gaps in the evidence base exist, demonstrating where future research should be focused to inform policy and practice.
