Join us to hear about the role of private registered training organisations (RTOs) in delivering training to young people who have left school early including; the barriers to their participation, teaching practices, the types of initiatives needed to support the learners, and the capability of private RTOs in providing the support.
This webinar will appeal to RTOs who provide education and training to these young learners and who want to understand how to better support them. It will also appeal to people who have an interest in learning more about young disadvantaged learner groups. The webinar is based on the publication 'Shedding light: private 'for profit' training providers and young early school leavers' [indexed in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 125.10], funded by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and undertaken by George Myconos from the Brotherhood of St Laurence, and research partners Kira Clarke from Melbourne University and Kitty Te Riele from Victoria University. It draws on findings from 130 private RTOs who were surveyed to find out their perspectives on teaching and learning practices, engaging with early school leavers, and the educational and wellbeing support services provided to the young learners.
The growth of private RTO provision of government-funded training, and a rise in issues around training quality and behaviour, has led to unprecedented scrutiny of their role in the sector. This research is timely and valuable as it sheds light on the training practices of private RTOs, and shows how they experience the challenge of catering for the needs of early school leaver learners.
