Sector insights: skills and performance challenges in the retail sector

This report published by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) examines skills and performance challenges facing the retail sector. The report: reviews evidence on the sector's labour market to identify the outlook for jobs and skills; identifies major trends affecting the sector and how the mix of skills needs is likely to change over the next decade; and investigates employers' perceptions of the skills needs of five specific occupations, and the challenges employers have in meeting those needs. The five occupations are customer service and sales assistants, customer service managers, marketing associate professionals, human resources managers and [small and medium enterprise] SME owners or managers. It uses a mixed methodology including interviews with stakeholders and retailers, combined with secondary analysis of survey data and literature. Also included with this publication is an executive summary, slide pack and infographic presenting the findings contained within the report.
