The education of adults in Britain

This book begins with an exploration of the objectives and definitions of adult education in Britain and by providing a brief overview of the major providers and their finances. The main part of the book examines each crucial area of adult education: vocational and liberal education; formal and non-formal education; residential provision and home study; consumer and civic education; management training; and basic education. Also explored is the approach to provision by the local education authorities (LEAs), the Workers Education Association (WEA), universities, technical colleges, trade unions and correspondence colleges. The roles of the mass media, libraries, prisons, armed forces, adult education centres, village centres, Women's Institutes, and the Manpower Services Commission (MSC) are also investigated. The final part of the book looks at the more general issues of the liaison amongst the providing agencies and of staffing and training, and concludes by examining the possible futures for the education of adults in Britain.
