Report of survey on the school-to-work transition in Indonesia

This report presents the results of a survey of over 2000 young people and 90 enterprises in Jakarta, Central Java, and Nusa Tenggara Timur. It covers education and training received by the young people, job aspirations and employment searching, working conditions and mobility, and perceptions of gender roles. The report focuses on the school-to-work transition of Indonesian youth, with the aim of identifying critical issues and suggesting policy actions. The findings indicate that: a disproportionate percentage of the households of self-employed youth are found in the lower income brackets; there is a clear link between parents’ occupation and self-employment, with young people from poor families being more likely to end up in the informal economy than others; young people are very mobile, with about a quarter of job seekers willing to move to find a job in another place; the gender gap in education is decreasing; while many respondents perceived educational opportunities to be equal for women and men, it is likely that gender still plays an important role in the Indonesian education system; and many young Indonesians leave school and start their job search well before they would like to enter the workforce.
