Readability: concept and measurement

A number of current readability formulae used to determine the readability level of text are considered. The disadvantages of the formulae are discussed and cloze procedure is suggested as a measure of text difficulty. Logical connectives are discussed in the context of text difficulty and an example of logical connectives is demonstrated with a passage called scaffolding and safety.
