Assessing the utility of 1996 Census data on Indigenous Australians
This paper looks at the credibility of analysis of the 1996 Census data on Indigenous Australians in light of the large non-childbirth-related increase in Indigenous population numbers. Credible analysis hinges on who the people are who have changed their Indigenous identification between the last two censuses. Three techniques are used to examine this question indirectly: changes to Indigenous identification in the last two censuses; cohort analysis of Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations 1986-98; and the geography of increased identification.
