Fragmented futures: new challenges in working life

This publication documents recent developments in the Australian labour market and the organisation of work. It focuses specifically on changes in working life and an assessment of their consequences. The analysis is based on statistical information, focus group interviews, and workplace and industry case studies. It is suggested that there is a need to re-examine the role and effectiveness of public policy in shaping Australian society. The publication highlights the increasing fragmentation of the labour market, including limited choices and opportunities for employment for some people, and the imbalance between working and family lives faced by many workers. Policy support and direction from government is advocated as a key element in resolving these problems. The authors identify a number of issues, including aspirations of working life, industry restructuring and occupational change, wage trends and growing inequality, skill, training and education, retirement and superannuation, and work/life balance. These issues are analysed in terms of their consequences and some suggestions for policy directions are offered. Show less
