Apprenticeship statistics: England

This briefing paper provides an overview of apprenticeships in England and the following data: total number of starts; starts by apprentice characteristics; starts by apprenticeship characteristic; apprenticeship achievements and participation; and significant apprenticeship policy developments. For the period 2016-17: people aged 25 and over accounted for 46 per cent of apprenticeship starts, people aged 19-24 accounted for 29 per cent, and those aged under 19 accounted for 25 per cent; 54 per cent of apprenticeships starts were by women and 46 per cent by men; the majority of apprenticeship starts were in the service sectors; and 12,800 more people were participating in an apprenticeship than the year before. In May 2017, the apprenticeship funding system was revised and apprenticeship levy was introduced. The paper includes a list of significant policy developments since 'Modern Apprenticeships' were introduced in 1994.
