Debating the first principles of English vocational education

The Edge Foundation believes that, while there has been extensive debate in the UK over the principles and philosophy of academic education in recent decades, the same has not been the case for vocational education. This has led to constant experimentation, change and frustrating repetition. As the consensus both here and internationally grows that high quality vocational education is a fundamental contributor to addressing future economic challenges, now is the time for us to have that debate. This report contributes to this debate to support a move away from instability towards a more settled and focused vision. The Edge Foundation worked with a coalition of partners to foster that debate - King's College London, the Institute of Education, City and Guilds and the National Baccalaureate Trust. An initial consultation document was published in early 2018. This report brings together some of the contributions from the consultation and debate. It represents the next step in the journey and encourages ongoing discussion.
