Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teacher workforce analysis

The More Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teachers Initiative (MATSITI) is a four-year national program to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering and remaining in teaching positions in Australian schools. This report is intended to act as a benchmark study to inform future workforce planning and to implement effective and lasting employment strategies. The report provides a workforce profile of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) teachers employed in Australian schools in 2012. It was commissioned to investigate significant under-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers. The scope of the data analysis includes demographics, qualifications, employment status and school type. The analysis identified that, in 2012, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers comprised 1.2 per cent of the total number of teachers working in all school education sectors.
