The Mid West region covers over 468,000 square kilometres, representing approximately 18.1 per cent of Western Australia's total area. Key towns in the Mid West region include Geraldton, Dongara and Kalbarri, in addition to Northampton, Mullewa, Wiluna, Mt Magnet, and Morawa. The Gascoyne region covers 135,000 square kilometres, representing approximately 5.3 per cent of the State's total area. Key towns in the Gascoyne region include Carnarvon, Denham and Exmouth. The population in the Mid West-Gascoyne region was 66,900 persons in 2011. The region accounted for 2.8 per cent of the State's population in 2011. Gross regional product (GRP) for the Mid West-Gascoyne region in 2010-11 was $7.0 billion, representing a 3.2 per cent contribution to gross state product. Mining, agriculture, forestry and fishing and construction are major contributors to the region's economic output. The region's labour force grew 7.5 per cent between 2004 and 2011, from 33,800 to 36,300 persons. The region's share of the State's labour force has declined from 3.2 per cent in 2004 to 2.8 per cent in 2011. Unemployment in the region has traditionally remained higher than the State average. The unemployment rate in 2011 however was 3.6 per cent compared to the State average of 4.2 per cent. Publicly funded student curriculum hours (SCH) in the region has grown by 337,349 SCH (or 35.2 per cent) between 2006 and 2010. In 2010 18.2 per cent of delivery was employment based, mostly apprenticeships in the automotive and building and construction groups. In 2010 the two main areas of training delivery in the Mid West-Gascoyne region were within the community services, health and education and building and construction groups. At 234,462 SCH, training in community services, health and education accounted for 18.1 per cent of all publicly funded delivery in the region. Approximately 13.3 per cent of all regional training delivery in this group was delivered in the Mid West-Gascoyne region.
