Gender equality matters: empowering women through literacy programmes
Gender equality is a key principle of the global Education for All (EFA) campaign, which was launched in 2000. As the target date for achieving the EFA goals (2015) approaches, it is critically important that Member States intensify efforts to achieve gender equality in education, a basic human right. This is especially urgent with regard to EFA Goal 4 - ‘Achieving a 50 per cent improvement of levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women’.
