Statistics show that increasing numbers of older Australians are undertaking apprenticeships. Employers are providing apprenticeship opportunities to their older employees to retain valued staff. Statistics also reveal that only 49% of Australians aged over 55 are currently employed. This figure is between 56% and 70% in the United States and much of Europe. Australia's skills shortage and the uncertainty of the world's financial markets have prompted many 'baby boomers' to postpone retirement and extend their working careers.
