Parallel education and defining the four sector

This paper explores how the definition of adult education as the fourth sector has led to recognition of a new area, ‘parallel education’. Based on work at Monash University and personal experience in community and adult education, the author illustrates this new model of parallel education with particular application to the emerging areas of cultural and educational tourism.

The case example of ‘The barton: Barbara Hanrahan’s sense of place’ demonstrates how the links between community and adult education and parallel education contribute to the strengthening of lifelong learning connections.
