Commonwealth Disability Strategy: a ten year framework for Commonwealth departments and agencies

The Commonwealth government is committed to achieving an Australian society where people with a disability can live, work and participate as valued and equal citizens. The Commonwealth Disability Strategy is an important step towards achieving that vision, by setting in place a framework of action for Commonwealth departments and agencies to progressively remove barriers for people with a disability. The Strategy is based on a belief that people with a disability have the same fundamental rights as other Australians, and should have equal opportunities to participate in community life. The Strategy will help to ensure that the Commonwealth's contribution to community life through the programs and services it provides fully accommodates the rights of people with a disability. It provides a 10 year planning framework for Commonwealth departments to: promote acceptance that people with a disability have the same fundamental rights as the rest of the community; identify and remove barriers in program development and delivery; eliminate discriminatory practices as employers and program administrators; and develop plans, strategies, and actions to ensure the needs of people with a disability are taken into account in planning and service delivery. The Strategy is the result of consultation with people with a disability, their supporters, the community and Commonwealth government agencies.
