Learning online: benefits and barriers in regional Australia: volume 1

The aim of this study is to compare the uptake of online learning of formal vocational education and training (VET) in regional and metropolitan Australia and to identify the benefits of and barriers to online learning for individuals and communities in regional Australia. Data on recent and current enrolments in online courses/modules were gathered from eight providers across four states. One provider in each state had its main campus in a regional location. Nine courses were selected for more detailed analysis. Although there is a lack of consistent, comparable enrolment data, the research highlighted that online delivery attracts a wide cross-section of students in terms of gender, age, employment status and geographical location.
