Perceptions and attitudes toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Western Australia 2023

This study is aimed at understanding the current state of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) awareness, knowledge, interest, perceptions, attitudes, behaviours, and participation in Western Australia (WA). It was commissioned by the WA Government to support development of a mission update [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 158.315] to WA's first STEM skills strategy, released in 2019 [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 136.941]. The study covers the views of 1,247 residents from metropolitan and regional areas, creating a comprehensive snapshot of STEM engagement across the state.

The study found that: about two-thirds (66 per cent) of Western Australians demonstrated awareness of the term 'STEM', with 46 per cent accurately identifying all components of the abbreviation; over two-thirds (67 per cent) of residents in WA believe there are positive impacts from scientific and technological developments; just over one in four Western Australians (26 per cent) are interested in pursuing a career in STEM-related fields; about 75 per cent of parents would encourage their children to pursue STEM-based careers; and the most popular STEM activities over the past 12 months included consuming STEM-related media (52 per cent), visiting museums (50 per cent), and engaging with zoos, animal parks, or aquariums (47 per cent).
