Non-English speaking background women in the community services and health industry sector

This project, based in south east Queensland, acknowledged the presence of non-English speaking background (NESB) women in low paid, unskilled or semi-skilled positions. The issue of information and access to vocational education and training (VET) programs was identified as a significant factor in restricting greater training participation rates for women. The project found that there is a need for ongoing and continued intervention and developmental work to increase the participation of and equitable outcomes for NESB women in the VET sector. Recommendations included: the development of local community training plans at community, regional and industry level; the allocation of resources to allow evaluation and further research on effective training models that respond to the VET needs of NESB women; and the development, under the Australian Recognition Framework (ARF), of assessment processes and data collection processes on NESB clients' outcomes.
