This publication aims to be a specific resource for small business employers to identify ways they might adopt workplace practices to assist their workers with family responsibilities better balance work and family lives and contribute more effectively to the overall productivity of the business. Telephone interviews were conducted with 23 owners/managing directors who were amongst those whose small businesses have been winners of the Australian Government and Telecom State and Territory Small Business Awards or Best Practice Demonstration Grants. Their views were sought on the benefits and obstacles that small businesses could encounter in providing a range of working hours and leave arrangements that could assist employees balance their job with family commitments. Included is: a profile of the participating companies; identification of work and family issues for small business; discussion of benefits and ways of assisting workers with family responsibilities; a closer look at family-friendly work practices; ideas for achieving family supportive practices; where to go for more information; and two case studies. Two appendices present, respectively, a profile of small business in Australia and a brief outline of the industrial relations framework and legislative requirements. Show less

This booklet forms part of the Australian Public Service Work and Family Strategy and aims to generate ideas about increasing the flexibility, competitiveness and efficiency of workers with families. It outlines barriers to a family friendly workplace and they are: compartmentalisation of home and work; the cost of implementing family friendly strategies; the assumption that the length of time at work is directly related to an employee’s commitment; inability to utilise flexitime arrangements by senior people; narrow definitions of family; applying rules rigidly; insensitivity to family problems; devaluing part-time workers; and training opportunities being scheduled at times when people with families are unable to attend. There are solutions that are offered such as: commitment by senior management; a written policy; communication and consultation about family friendly measures; training for managers in developing a supportive management style; raising awareness; analysing the needs in the workplace; and encouraging staff to develop positive attitudes to flexible office routines and organisation at work. Case studies of the Sydney Water Board, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the Commonwealth Bank and the Australian Tax Office are used as best practice examples. Show less

This good practice guide is based on the research project Enhancing training advantage for remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners by John Guenther et al. on behalf of Ninti One Limited. The work examines five unique vocational education and training (VET) programs in remote areas and identifies how retention and completion can be improved and what other indicators of success are important outcomes of training in remote communities. This good practice guides synthesises the findings of the five case studies and looks at the factors that are important in enabling retention and ensuring good practice.

This is a critical new guide to support all those working with families and parents. The publication has been developed with colleagues from across the family learning and working with parents sectors to link and make sense of the quality agenda in multi-agency settings. Our review highlighted 28 different advisory and regulatory quality frameworks and guidance documents used by, or impacting on, family learning and working with parents practitioners operating in group settings.
The guide provides a single reference point for the fundamental building blocks of quality to support all families, especially the most vulnerable families, to receive a good quality learning experience at every family learning and parenting skills session, irrespective of the location or practitioner group. It links all the frameworks and guide-lines to a basic set of building blocks of quality that can be used in any setting.
The book is aimed at a number of audiences: for tutors and facilitators to consider their practice, and for managers, co-ordinators and those responsible for quality to review their organisation's performance and for any practitioner working in a learning environment across agency boundaries.

This is the fourth issue of the Compendium presented by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and is in English and Arabic. It provides a series of data and indicators which shed light on the social situation and on the social and economic changes taking place in the ESCWA region, to enable researchers and planners to obtain a realistic picture of the development process. It was prepared in accordance with the latest recommendations issued by the United Nations in 'Handbook on social indicators' and emphasis is put on special population groups such as children, disabled and youth. The data were obtained from national statistical offices and from world and regional databases. The main topics covered are: population, human settlements, households and families, education, health and health services, work and economic activity, income and expenditure, culture and communication, and crime and criminal justice.
