Compendium of social statistics and indicators: fourth issue

This is the fourth issue of the Compendium presented by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and is in English and Arabic. It provides a series of data and indicators which shed light on the social situation and on the social and economic changes taking place in the ESCWA region, to enable researchers and planners to obtain a realistic picture of the development process. It was prepared in accordance with the latest recommendations issued by the United Nations in 'Handbook on social indicators' and emphasis is put on special population groups such as children, disabled and youth. The data were obtained from national statistical offices and from world and regional databases. The main topics covered are: population, human settlements, households and families, education, health and health services, work and economic activity, income and expenditure, culture and communication, and crime and criminal justice.
