This document comprises a report in Arabic and executive summaries in English and French. The goal of the program is to enhance different learning and training opportunities for marginalised youth, especially those not going to schools or training centres, such as youth groups living in the post war arena or countries suffering from rapid social, economic and political change. The countries selected were Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, and Gaza and West Bank. Topics covered include national needs and assessment and identification of fields and programs needed to ensure that marginalised people have access to work experience and professional career help. Various national projects were discussed and plans of action were determined, including the costs of training programs. Recommendations are listed, including the formulation of a Steering Committee to supervise and follow-up the planned activities. Show less

This is the fourth issue of the Compendium presented by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and is in English and Arabic. It provides a series of data and indicators which shed light on the social situation and on the social and economic changes taking place in the ESCWA region, to enable researchers and planners to obtain a realistic picture of the development process. It was prepared in accordance with the latest recommendations issued by the United Nations in 'Handbook on social indicators' and emphasis is put on special population groups such as children, disabled and youth. The data were obtained from national statistical offices and from world and regional databases. The main topics covered are: population, human settlements, households and families, education, health and health services, work and economic activity, income and expenditure, culture and communication, and crime and criminal justice.
