TVET and sustainable development: a cautionary note

This final chapter looks at the issue of sustainable development, suggesting that this is not a straightforward concept. The role of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is considered, with a major issue being whether TVET should be a leader or a follower in respect of sustainable development. The chapter concludes with two challenges. The first is to gain focus in defining sustainable development as it relates to TVET. The second challenge is to determine how TVET can be appropriately involved. The author suggests that accommodation must be reached between the point of view that TVET should be used as a way of developing and clarifying attitudes and beliefs, and the belief that TVET needs to provide skills that enable individuals to obtain employment and provide for their families.
