Women's participation in higher education has overtaken men's. However, women have been historically under-represented in some fields and continue to be so: they predominate in education, and health and welfare as their main fields of study, while men predominate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Whatever field of study they choose, however, women's earnings still lag behind men's in all fields and in all OECD and partner countries.

Analyses of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results suggest that: successful education systems are able to guarantee that all students succeed at high levels; across OECD countries, around 60 per cent of the overall, country-level variation in student performance can be traced to differences in how well students who attend the same school can be expected to perform; and about 40 per cent of the variation in student performance in OECD countries is observed between schools; but among high-performing countries, differences in performance are generally smaller than those in the average OECD country.

The number of students enrolled in tertiary education outside their country of citizenship has sharply increased over the last decades, reflecting the expansion of tertiary education systems worldwide and the globalisation of economies and societies. This paper makes the following points in relation to this trend: (1) between 2000 and 2011, the number of international students has more than doubled; today, almost 4.5 million tertiary students are enrolled outside their country of citizenship; (2) the largest numbers of international students are from China, India and Korea, with Asian students accounting for 53 per cent of all students studying abroad worldwide; (3) new players have emerged on the international education market in the past decades, such as Australia, New Zealand, Spain, the Russian Federation and, more recently, Korea; by contrast, the share of international students in some of the most attractive countries - Germany and the United States, for instance - has declined; and (4) as countries increasingly benefit from student mobility, the competition to attract and retain students has diversified the map of destinations over the past decade.

How much can be inferred about a student's performance in school by looking at what his or her parents do for a living? To find out, [Programme for International Student Assessment] PISA 2012 asked participating students about their parents' occupations. The students' responses were then coded into an internationally comparable classification that allows for identifying individuals working in similar industries, on similar tasks, with the same types of responsibilities.
Key messages are that: (1) students whose parents work in professional occupations generally outperform other students in mathematics, while students whose parents work in elementary occupations tend to underachieve compared to their peers; (2) the strength of the relationship between parents' occupations and student performance varies considerably across countries: for example, when it comes to mathematics performance, the children of cleaners in Shanghai, China outperform the children of professionals in the United States, and the children of professionals in Germany outperform the children of professionals in Finland, on average; and (3) Finland and Japan achieve high levels of performance by ensuring that the children of parents who work in elementary occupations are given the same education opportunities and the same encouragement as the children of professionals. PISA, the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment, assesses how well students approaching the end of compulsory education are able to apply the skills and knowledge developed at school to perform tasks needed to participate in society. This publication sets out the conceptual framework underlying the OECD/PISA assessments as well as the context and constraints within which the OECD/PISA assessments are placed. Reading literacy, mathematics literacy and scientific literacy are defined as the three domains forming the core of PISA in terms of the contents that students need to acquire, the processes that need to be performed, and the contexts in which knowledge and skills are applied. The methods developed to ensure that the assessment tasks are valid across countries, are strong at measuring relevant skills and are based on authentic life situations, are also described. Taking the students' perspective, this publication analyses the evolution of key education priorities and key education policies in 43 education systems. It compares more recent developments in education policy ecosystems (mainly between 2015 and 2017) with various education policies adopted between 2008 and 2014. This report includes around 200 policies spanning from early childhood education and care (ECEC) to higher education and lifelong learning on topics such as: improving the quality and access to ECEC, promoting education success for all students, reducing the negative impact of some system-level policies and practices, increasing completion of upper secondary education, developing quality vocational education and training, enhancing the quality of tertiary education, supporting transitions across education pathways and the labour market.

This report focuses on the results from the [Programme for International Student Assessment] PISA 2000 survey in terms of student approaches to learning, examining the learning strategies adopted by students, their motivation, and their confidence in their ability to learn. The results of the survey reveal strong correlation between student approaches to learning and measurable student outcomes. The results suggest that effective learning depends significantly on developing positive attitudes. The analysis identifies which learner characteristics are most common in 22 OECD and four non-OECD countries. Differences between the approaches to learning of a range of groups, including male and female students, and those from more and less advantaged social backgrounds, are noted.

This volume looks at the progress countries have made in raising student performance and improving equity in the distribution of learning opportunities. Chapter one describes how [Programme for International Student Assessment] PISA has measured trends in reading performance between the first PISA assessment in 2000 and the latest in 2009. Since reading was the focus of both assessments, it is possible to obtain detailed comparisons of how student performance in reading changed between 2000 and 2009. The chapter also discusses the methods used for tracking trends in student performance in mathematics and science. Chapter two highlights trends in reading performance between 2000 and 2009. It includes changes in performance among the lowest- and highest-achieving students, boys and girls, students with an immigrant background, socio-economically advantaged and disadvantaged students, and among countries. Chapter three describes trends in mathematics performance between 2003 and 2009, and trends in science performance between 2006 and 2009. Chapter four examines trends in equity in learning opportunities and outcomes. It focuses on how variations in reading performance have changed between 2000 and 2009, and the extent to which the impact of socio-economic background and immigrant status on performance has also changed during the same period. Chapter five looks at whether students’ attitudes towards reading changed over the years. It describes trends observed between 2000 and 2009 in whether and what students read for enjoyment, and how the gender gap in reading preferences and performance has evolved during that period. The chapter also discusses trends in teacher-student relations and disciplinary climate in the classroom. The final chapter identifies conclusions and policy implications. Show less
