Insurance company Axa France launched a general policy aimed at meeting economic challenges and improving efficiency. A main element of this policy is a collective agreement named CAP Metier. Implemented from 2003 to 2005, the measures introduced under this agreement facilitated occupational mobility within the company on a large scale. The programme allowed for the company to be restructured without the need for redundancies.

Long sheltered from unemployment, science students today have to give some thought to preparing for their entry into working life. The French Science Insert project, selected from among the projects funded by the Fonds d’experimentation pour la jeunesse/Fund for Experimental Youth Projects, is equipping them with the tools they require for this purpose. The method adopted to evaluate the project, the so-called double difference method, can be used to show that the awareness-raising measures developed in the course of the project are appropriate.

This chapter is part of a book based on the findings of a comparative study of the relationship between higher education and employment three to four years after graduation. The Career after Higher Education: a European Research Study (CHEERS) questioned graduates in 11 European countries and Japan about their socio-biographic background, course of study, transition to employment, current employment situation, competences and job requirements, job satisfaction, and regional and international mobility. This chapter provides an overview of the transition from higher education to work in the CHEERS countries. The first section examines key indicators of the transition period, for example job search behaviour and employer selection criteria. In the following section, relationships between different indicators of the transition process are explored. Finally, the authors look at the effects of a smooth or difficult transition process on labour market outcomes.

The European research and development project 'The acquisition of integrated qualifications for professional work and study - an assessment of innovative approaches in seven European countries (INTEQUAL)' examined postcompulsory education schemes combining vocational training and general education. This paper is one of a series of thematic studies undertaken by international sub-teams on various aspects of the schemes and indexed from TD/TNC 62.489 to TD/TNC 62.492.
Qualifications with a dual orientation towards skilled employment and higher education are offered in Germany as a pilot scheme within the dual system of vocational training, in Austria as adult school supplementary training for students working full-time, and in France as full-time vocational education. This chapter examines the vocational and educational career paths of participants from these three schemes to measure the extent to which the pathway affected their vocational career paths and the number of students who chose employment rather than higher education. The authors begin with an overview of the educational models supporting the schemes in the three countries. They then examine and compare survey data from the three countries in relation to person-specific data upon completion of the dual qualification program, data concerning the dual qualification route, and empirical data relating to the success of the route. The final section provides a comparative overview of the outcomes of the dual qualification route in each of the three national contexts.

‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article in this issue examines the changing means of middle management recruitment in industry in the UK, France and Germany, drawing on research results from a comparative study undertaken through the Leonardo da Vinci program. Many industrial companies are increasingly recruiting higher-education graduates for their middle-management positions whereas these have traditionally been filled through the promotion of existing workers. This new form of recruitment is closely linked to national contexts but generally does not take place on the same scale or at the same rate in all the companies using it. The study raised a number of questions: (1) what is the future of worker careers?; (2) what will the consequences be for choices of initial and continuing training streams; and (3) what solutions could help revitalise worker advancement through promotion. The workplace in 2023 is still reverberating with the lingering effects of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-driven upheavals to the global labour market. Employers face worker shortages and escalating wage growth, while seeking to drive up productivity and profitability amid other rising business costs. It remains to be seen whether the balance of power will eventually revert away from workers now that high-profile layoffs have started to take place in some industries. But with high inflation unlikely to return to what many people have come to see as 'normal' low levels any time soon, pay growth is set to stay a key area of focus for workers and companies as we look ahead.
That's not to say, however, that issues like flexibility, a positive working environment, inclusive company culture or good career prospects and job security are not critically important also. As workers continue to demand and expect to be given more, the onus is on employers to come up with innovative ways to satisfy their needs in a way that makes sense, and thus ensure maximum motivation, dedication and effectiveness in their workplace. This report is a source of intelligence and insight into how workers around the world are feeling about the world of work today and their hopes and fears for the present and the future. It also points to some of the initiatives and best practices that companies are developing to enable employees to flourish.

The results of the Generation survey: COVID et apres? (After [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID what?) serve to document the varied situations of these economically active individuals in the face of the crisis. Whether they were in stable or precarious employment, whether they were working in sectors exposed to or unaffected by the crisis, whether or not they had children, how did these young employees or self-employed workers get through the crisis?

This paper examines the determinants of the choice of the major when the length of studies is uncertain, by using a framework in which students entering post-secondary education are assumed to anticipate their future earnings. For that purpose, [the authors] use French data coming from the 1992 and 1998 Generation surveys collected by the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches sur l'Emploi et les Qualifications (CEREQ, Marseille). [The authors'] econometric approach is based on a semi-structural three-equations model, which is identified thanks to some exclusion restrictions. [The authors] exploit in particular exogenous variations in the earnings returns associated with the majors across the business cycle, in order to identify the causal effect of expected earnings on the probability of choosing a given major. Relying on a three component mixture distribution, [the authors] account for correlation between the unobserved individual-specific terms affecting the preferences for the majors, the unobserved individual-specific factors entering the equation determining the length of studies within each major, and that affecting the labor market earnings equation. Following Arcidiacono and Jones (2003), [the authors] use the [expectation–maximization] EM algorithm with a sequential maximization step to produce consistent parameter estimates. Simulating for each given major a 10 per cent increase in the expected earnings suggests that expected earnings have a statistically significant but quantitatively small impact on the allocation of students across majors.

This chapter introduces the goals and aspirations for this volume, showing how the different chapters build on earlier studies of career guidance in the region in an effort to develop theoretically informed accounts of the field as it is conceived and practised in context. The value of using the Mediterranean as a lens through which to consider career guidance is discussed, suggesting that by so doing, new insights can be generated that promote a deeper understanding of what career guidance might involve, and the forms and shapes it can assume. Such intellectual labour, it is argued, is necessary if we are to develop Southern perspectives, which can serve to trouble mainstream understandings of what career guidance entails, particularly if context-sensitive accounts of the public and private benefits of guidance are to be articulated.

Drawing from a study of young university students in Australia, France and the U.K., homo promptus represents the authors' effort to trace how young people are positioned within discourses of higher education and employment to provide a conceptual shape to emergent characteristics of their otherwise diverse lives. We suggest that homo promptus is: entrepreneurial and strategic; plans adaptively for the future while living life in the short-term; not tethered to a single place; permanently in 'situational' mode and lives in waithood. We also argue that overlaying the figure of homo promptus is a complex affective combination of optimism, pessimism and anxiety evident in our interviewees' narratives. We then briefly attempt to reflexively locate ourselves as youth researchers in relation to the study from which this paper is drawn, outlining certain caveats and limitations of presenting another limited figure of youth, as discussed previously by Threadgold (2019) in this journal, but one which seeks to bring some clarity to the sometimes messy work of youth research.
