LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue examines findings on participation in VET in schools programs, pathways that are associated with these programs, and how students who do not complete Year 12 can be helped by vocational education and training (VET) courses beyond school. The highlights include: VET in schools programs provide greater choice and opportunities to meet the diverse needs and interests of students; VET in schools subjects were undertaken by approximately one quarter of those students who completed Year 12; VET in schools programs have value for all students in preparing them for the transition from school to workplace or further education and training; VET programs play an important and growing role in providing pathways for young people who do not complete Year 12; and young people in areas of high unemployment and those who are least job ready in terms of educational attainment are least likely to participate in VET. LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which focuses on the labour force experiences of secondary school students in Australia, highlights that: students who undertake short work experience programs benefit in terms of learning skills appropriate to a particular job; work placement programs encourage some students to complete their schooling; part-time jobs are perceived as being useful for developing general employment skills; part-time jobs of less than 10 hours a week do not affect academic performance of Years 11 and 12 students; and students with part-time jobs are less likely to be unemployed at age 19 than those who did not work part-time while at secondary school. LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which examines the main pathways by which Australian youth move from school to work, highlights that: the school-to-work pathways in Australia are highly diverse and individualised; by the mid-1990s, 43% of Year 10 students from the late 1980s had obtained either a university degree or a TAFE diploma or were studying for one of these qualifications; tertiary qualifications had considerable influence in maintaining full-time employment; the majority of school leavers without tertiary qualifications spend most of their first seven post-school years in full-time work; about 16% of male Year 10 students and 20% of female students had problematic pathways; young people whose main after school activity in the first year was either an apprenticeship, full-time employment or full-time study were more likely to experience successful pathways.
This brief is based on a paper presented at the Australian Centre conference in Potsdam, Germany in May 2000, which was organised by the Monash University-ACER Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET). It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue on early school leaving and 'non-completion in Australia' highlights that: students who perform well at school are less likely to leave school early; boys have a greater tendency than girls to leave school; students whose parents are less educated than average are more likely to leave school early; more than 20 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students leave school by the start of Year 11; only a small number of schools impact the school leaving rate; and a high proportion of early leavers in recent years have gained employment. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which examines whether students' educational performance is influenced by where they live, highlights that: there are small differences between the literacy and numeracy performances of rural and urban students in the middle years of their education; there are only slight differences in their choice of subjects in Year 12 between rural and urban students, with rural students studying in the areas of health, home science and agriculture more frequently than their urban counterparts; the participation of young people living in regional and remote areas in Year 12 and higher education is lower than that of their urban counterparts; and the rates of participation in VET for rural people are at least as high as in urban areas.
