The forest industry in Australia contributes to jobs and economic activity in many communities. During the last decade, there has been little information on how the industry is changing in different regions, including change in the number of jobs generated, dependence of different communities on the economic activity generated by the industry, the type and quality of work generated in the industry, and how residents of forest-industry dependent communities view the industry and its effects. Forest and Wood Products Australia has invested in research to produce up-to-date information on the socio-economic impacts of the forest industry. This report presents findings for the forest industry in Tasmania, where the forest industry has experienced rapid change in the last decade, particularly in the native forest sector.

The data analysed for this report was drawn from (i) a survey of forest industry businesses conducted in 2017 to 2018, in which 46 per cent of key businesses completed the survey, while data on the remaining 54 per cent was obtained from industry experts, other businesses, and publicly available information; (ii) using data from businesses surveyed and experts to identify employment and expenditure for a number of businesses not actively surveyed; (iii) the 2006, 2011 and 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing; (iv) economic modelling using EconSearch's [Regional Industry Structure and Employment] RISE regional input-output model; and (v) the 2016 Regional Wellbeing Survey, used to examine perceptions of the forest industry by residents living in communities in which the forest industry operates.

This report presents findings for the forest industry in Victoria, excluding the 'Green Triangle' in south-west Victoria, which is examined in a separate report [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 137.642]. For simplicity, this region is referred to as the 'Victorian forest industry' in this report; in all cases, this excludes plantation areas in the south-west.

The data analysed for this report was drawn from (i) a survey of forest industry businesses conducted in 2016 to 2017, in which 62 per cent of businesses completed the survey, while data on the remaining 38 per cent was obtained from industry experts, other businesses, and publicly available information; (ii) the 2006, 2011 and 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing; (iii) economic modelling using EconSearch's [Regional Industry Structure and Employment] RISE regional input-output model; and (iv) the 2016 Regional Wellbeing Survey, used to examine perceptions of the forest industry by residents living in communities in which the forest industry operates.

Forest and Wood Products Australia has invested in research to produce up-to-date information on the socio-economic impacts of the forest industry in the South West Slopes and Central Tablelands regions of New South Wales (NSW). These regions together contain around a quarter of Australia's softwood plantations, and a large wood and paper processing industry that utilises logs (fibre) harvested from these plantations.

The data analysed for this report was drawn from (i) a survey of forest industry businesses operating in the two regions, conducted between October 2016 and February 2017; (ii) data from the 2006, 2011 and 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing, (iii) economic modelling using EconSearch's [Regional Industry Structure and Employment] RISE regional input-output model; and (iv) the 2016 Regional Wellbeing Survey, used to examine perceptions of the forest industry by residents living in communities in which the forest industry operates.

Sandalwood plantations and firewood collection are not examined in this report.

The data analysed for this report was drawn from (i) a survey of forest industry businesses conducted in 2016 to 2017, in which 71 per cent of businesses completed the survey, while data on the remaining 29 per cent was obtained from industry experts, other businesses, and publicly available information; (ii) the 2006, 2011 and 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing; (iii) economic modelling using EconSearch's [Regional Industry Structure and Employment] RISE regional input-output model; and (iv) the 2016 Regional Wellbeing Survey, used to examine perceptions of the forest industry by residents living in communities in which the forest industry operates. In addition, a survey of businesses who utilise outputs of primary processors was undertaken to better identify the extent of activity generated through the supply chain by wood and fibre grown in WA.
