The [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic has caused nothing short of a revolution in the world of work in the 21st century. Never in most people's living memory has there been a global phenomenon that has reshaped the employment landscape so dramatically in a multitude of countries, dominating economic activity and altering the outlook of the workforce, perhaps forever. This upheaval is still underway but it's clear that things will never be the same again. This year's People at Work study captures these fascinating and unique developments in detail. It highlights just how widespread and globally consistent some of the emerging and escalating trends are, while underscoring how nuanced and complex the situation is at local levels.
Key findings are: (1) Workers want change: re-evaluating the importance of job security and business ethics; (2) Job satisfaction and outlook: employees have high expectations; (3) Pay and benefits: salary is a priority, but it's not all that matters; (4) Mental health: stress is increasing and work is suffering; and (5) Remote work and living arrangements: people poised to make a move.

This chapter is part of a book based on the findings of a comparative study of the relationship between higher education and employment three to four years after graduation. The Career after Higher Education: a European Research Study (CHEERS) questioned graduates in 11 European countries and Japan about their socio-biographic background, course of study, transition to employment, current employment situation, competences and job requirements, job satisfaction, and regional and international mobility. The author draws on graduates' responses about their life goals, work orientations and job satisfaction to analyse how far these were linked to their professional situation four years after graduating.
An overview of the findings are presented in the companion volume, indexed at TD/TNC 98.494. Selected chapters from this volume are indexed from TD/TNC 98.496 to TD/TNC 98.500 and from TD/TNC 98.551 to TD/TNC 98.559. Show less

Using a representative sample of Spanish individuals, we explore the effects of workers' education on self-assessed satisfaction with diverse specific aspects of their jobs. We find that the effects of education level on job satisfaction differ, both in size and direction, according to the aspect of the job considered, especially after controlling for actual job attributes and other workers' characteristics. We also find that workers' perceptions of the match between education and employment are relevant as determinants of job satisfaction irrespective of workers' education level.

New information and communications technologies have revolutionised work and life in the 21st century. The constant connectivity enabled by these devices allows work to be performed at any time and from almost anywhere. This joint report by the ILO and Eurofound synthesises the findings of national studies from 15 countries, plus the European Working Conditions Survey, to consider the effects of telework and ICT-mobile work (T/ICTM) on the world of work. The report shows that this work arrangement is growing in most countries. Positive effects of T/ICTM usually include a shortening of commuting time, greater working time autonomy, better overall work-life balance, and higher productivity. At the same time, disadvantages include its tendency to lengthen working hours, to create interference between work and personal life, and to result in work intensification, which can lead to high levels of stress with negative consequences for workers' health and well-being. The ambiguous and even contradictory effects of T/ICTM on working conditions represent a current, real-world example about the challenges of the future of work. A range of policy suggestions to improve T/ICTM are made on the basis of the findings.

Purpose - Utilising data from 18 in-depth case studies, this study seeks to explore training, development and human resource development (HRD) practices in European call centres. It aims to argue that the complexity and diversity of training, development and HRD practices is best understood by studying the multilayered contexts within which call centres operate. Call centres operate as open systems and training, development and HRD practices are influenced by environmental, strategic, organisational and temporal conditions. Design/methodology/approach - The study utilised a range of research methods, including in-depth interviews with multiple stakeholders, documentary analysis and observation. The study was conducted over a two-year period. Findings - The results indicate that normative models of HRD are not particularly valuable and that training, development and HRD in call centres is emergent and highly complex. Originality/value - This study represents one of the first studies to investigate training and development and HRD practices and systems in European call centres.

The Randstad Workmonitor was launched in the Netherlands in 2003, then in Germany, and now covers 32 countries around the world. The study encompasses Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas. The Randstad Workmonitor is published four times a year, making both local and global trends in mobility visible over time. The Workmonitor's Mobility Index, which tracks employee confidence and captures the likelihood of an employee changing jobs within the next six months, provides a comprehensive understanding of sentiments and trends in the job market. Besides mobility, the survey addresses employee satisfaction and personal motivation as well as a rotating set of themed questions. The study is conducted online among employees aged 18-65, working a minimum of 24 hours a week in a paid job (not self-employed). Minimum sample size is 400 interviews per country. The Survey Sampling International (SSI) panel is used for sampling purposes.

In this paper [the authors] develop and test a new set of measures of skill mismatches, based on data on skill levels and skill use in the domains of literacy and numeracy from the [Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies] PIAAC project. The measures [the authors] develop represent the extent of skill use relative to one's own skill level. [The authors] test the measures by examining their relation to a number of labour market outcomes. [The authors] subsequently examine how mismatches are distributed across and within a large number of countries, and use [the] results to reflect on possible causes and consequences of mismatches. [The authors] find that, in general, higher skill utilization is always beneficial in terms of productivity and job satisfaction, and that 'overutilization' of skills therefore points more towards a fuller use of the available human capital, rather than to a serious skill shortage.
[The authors] find an asymmetry in returns between literacy and numeracy skills: although numeracy skill level appears to pay higher dividends than literacy skill level, shifts in skill utilization within skill levels have greater consequences for literacy than for numeracy. The distribution of mismatches across and within countries is broadly consistent with the expectation that skills will be used more fully under competitive market conditions with few institutional or organizational barriers. Finally, skill mismatches are only quite weakly related to educational mismatches, reflecting the heterogeneity in skill supply and demand that cross-cuts the dividing lines set by formally defined qualification levels and job titles.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the quality of jobs in call centres by focusing on the opportunities for promotion in this sector. More specifically, the research questions focus on discovering whether promotion is common practise in the call centre sector and on identifying the factors that affect this. Design/methodology/approach – A survey questionnaire was administered to call centre directors or their human resource managers. A least square regression analysis was carried out to examine how training, job security and knowledge about employees' abilities, affect the use of promotion in call centres, as well as three structural variables of the organisations: size, being part of a larger organisation and whether the call centre was in-house or outsourced. Findings – The results suggest a limited use of promotion and the absence of consolidated internal labour markets in this sector. Nevertheless, a diverse range of call centres exists in terms of the use of promotion. The analysis identifies structural and managerial variables that identify where promotion is likely to be employed more intensively in call centres. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation of the paper is related to the variables used to examine training. An important implication of the results for managers is the suggestion to employ promotion policies with other human resource management practices. Originality/value – The main contribution of this paper is the finding that the use of promotion has been determined by structural factors and other management practices. Therefore, call centre managers are encouraged to establish these practices in order to subsequently facilitate the use of promotion.

This paper analyses the determining factors of [Doctorate of Philosophy] PhDs' career success. Earnings have been used as an objective measure, and a subjective measure of success was constructed based on the individuals' assessments of broader aspects of their job position. When analysing the data by field of knowledge and gender, it was found that males and PhD holders in the field of sciences achieve greater career success in terms of earnings. However, the theory of the glass ceiling does not appear to apply. On the basis of a subjective measure of career success, on the other hand, it is women and PhD holders in humanities and social sciences that are more successful. Regardless of the measure of success used, the most important determining factor in career success is job satisfaction, thus reinforcing the theory that PhD holders are a group of workers with a more complex conception of career success.

This paper investigates the determinants of job satisfaction in three European countries: Spain, the Netherlands and Norway. [The authors] base their analysis on Locke's discrepancy theory (Locke 1969) and decompose subjective evaluation of job characteristics into surplus and deficit levels. [The authors] study as well the importance of over-education and over-skilling on job satisfaction. [The authors] use REFLEX data, a survey on university graduates. [The authors] conclude that job satisfaction is mostly determined by the subjective evaluation of intrinsic job characteristics, with asymmetric impact of surpluses and deficits. Over-skilling is more important than over-education in explaining job satisfaction, although the latter is also significant in all countries.
