This book examines the non-educational contexts and informal circumstances through which incidental learning takes place and emphasises the importance of such learning in adult education. The author suggests that involvement in voluntary organisations, social struggles, and political activity of every kind provides powerful learning opportunities. The core argument is the notion of adult learning and education as complex and contested social activities. The dominant view of adult education in the English-speaking world excludes a large proportion of adult learning. The author uses case studies of a range of environmental, women’s, worker and political struggles from the USA, Australia, Brazil and Zimbabwe to explore how involvement in social action can help people to ‘unlearn dominant, oppressive ideologies and discourses and replace them with oppositional, liberatory ones, even if such processes of emancipatory learning are inevitably complex and contradictory’. He relates these processes of informal learning in contested contexts to current perspectives in adult education and proposes an innovative, more radical agenda in adult education theory and practice. Colleges and universities retain Native American and Latino college students at lower rates than other ethnic groups even when culturally based services, financial assistance, and support are provided. College teaching and conceptions of learning have yet to evolve on a widespread basis toward culturally diverse epistemologies and practice. This narrative inquiry explores meaning making of 50 Native, Hispano, and Mestizo American students about their learning in a variety of contexts including face-to-face and online college courses as well as learning at home, in extended family and tribal contexts. The study also explores teaching practices students identified as most helpful to their learning and success. Underlying cultural constructs emerged from narrative analysis in eight areas of learning.

This report takes a wide-ranging view of the learning and education of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples of Canada. The report introduces the Holistic Lifelong Learning Measurement Framework that is used to measure Indigenous learning in Canada. Chapter two examines the sources and domains of knowledge and includes various indicators of learning relating to language, culture, the natural world and family, Elders and community. Chapter three examines the entire lifelong learning journey across the entire lifespan and in the different environments of school, home, community, work and the land and looks at the various indicators related to learning at each life stage. Community well-being indicators are also included to highlight how various economic, social and health challenges can impact on learning opportunities. The report concludes with some future directions for Indigenous learning. Show less

In light of recent developments in educational policy and the positioning of vocational education and training (VET) across the European Union (EU), it was timely to explore these new directions and the lessons for Australian VET. A striking feature both in the European Union and Australia is the wide scope of issues that governments are addressing and the role they envisage for VET. The study was based on an analysis of relevant, available literature and a survey of a small number of selected informants on European VET. There is an enormous array of sources available on European developments, and so the review had to be restricted mainly to the EU level and to sources in English. Nine most common themes emerged: higher education and VET inter-relationships; validation of non-formal and informal learning; access, inclusiveness and learner engagement; development of VET teachers; adult and continuing education; retention and guidance services; employer engagement and the role of social partners; and key competencies for lifelong learning and higher-level apprenticeships. The study found that many of the factors driving these policy formulations are common (for example, globalisation, increasing competition and growth of the knowledge economy). While the EU countries and Australia have different structures in place for the various sectors of education, there is convergence around the imperative to 'modernise' VET systems and a significant amount of common thinking in relation to many issues. This report illustrates a number of those issues and examples worthy of closer consideration by VET policy-makers and practitioners in Australia. Show less

This article reports on the findings of research seeking to understand the informal dimensions of online learning in the labour movement. It draws on analysis of online learning workshop participation in specially initiated sessions amongst labour activists/educators from across Canada. Findings are based on the analysis of original interview data as well as content and interaction analysis of online postings. Barriers to effective participation are discussed, as are possible functions of online learning/communication in the labour movement. I argue that there is strong evidence to suggest that online learning can be a valuable addition to the education capacity of the labour movement, and that an important part of this contribution revolves around a recognition of informal learning, the linkages between the online and the offline world, and the unique goals of the labour movement.

This resource kit consists of a set of 46 training cards designed to help experienced child care workers, supervisors or managers conduct high quality on-the-job training. The cards are suitable for use with all carers and there is a particular focus on the needs of those with low levels of English language and literacy. Each card takes between 30 and 40 minutes to deliver. The kit includes topic cards and activity cards. The topic cards have a structure that is easy to follow, with a scenario, questions, and ideas for discussion. The activity cards offer carers an opportunity to practice a range of literacy and communication tasks. There are two booklets which are used to keep a record of learning and assessment. Show less

This paper represents a case study of Chile. It explores and reports on the range of recent local, national and international interventions and initiatives in India relevant to the orientation and re-orientation of education and training towards self-employment and income generation. Four different settings for this type of education and training are identified: regular schooling, post-basic schooling (including specialised technical and vocational schools and training centres, and national industrial training institutions), enterprise-based training and training within the informal sector itself (most notably systems of apprenticeship). This country study contains a large amount of information drawn from policy documents and reports on innovatory projects and programs. There are also accounts of personal interviews with key officials and personal observations. Case studies of key initiatives illustrating some of the dimensions of good practice are presented, as well as of failure. A review of the recent literature concerning education and training in Chile is also presented.

In this article the author contends that assessment of prior learning is based largely on Western academic assumptions about objective, universal knowledge. She explores efforts in New Zealand and Ontario, Canada, to assess knowledge that is embedded in specific cultural and ethnic contexts and that challenge current definitions of accreditable learning.
