In the 2017-18 Budget, the Government established the ongoing Skilling Australians Fund to focus governments' efforts on apprenticeships and traineeships. The fund is intended to boost the number of people who choose and succeed in an apprenticeship pathway and employers will gain the skilled workers they need to drive innovation and growth. The Australian Government has made funding available in the first five years of the program, from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2022. Together with matched funding from the states, the fund will seek to support a significant number of new apprenticeships and other employment-related training. The fund is currently managed through a project-based National Partnership (available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 133.453) with the state and territory governments that commenced on 1 July 2018. Funding is prioritised for projects that support apprenticeships, traineeships pre-apprenticeship, pre-traineeship and other employment-related training opportunities across a range of key priority areas.

The 'Skilling Australians Fund factsheet July 2022' provides an update to the Skilling Australians Fund fact sheet, with latest payments and additional commencements figures. Since 2017, the Fund has provided over $854 million to state and territory projects that have supported over 220,000 additional apprenticeships, traineeships, pre-apprenticeship and traineeships and other employment-related training activities.

Responsibility for skills and training transferred from the Department of Education and Training to the Department of Jobs and Small Business, which changed names to the Department of Education and the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business respectively, as a result of the Administrative Arrangements Order amendments introduced on 29 May 2019.

The Administrative Arrangements Order made on 5 December 2019 with effect from 1 February 2020 transferred employment and skills functions to the renamed Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The Administrative Arrangements Order made on 1 June 2022 with effect from 1 July 2022 transferred responsibility for vocational education and training and apprenticeships to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
