This video and booklet are designed to be used as an adult literacy awareness raising resource. It addresses critical adult literacy issues by reviewing our Adult Literacy Action Campaign (ALAC) New South Wales Projects and interviewing some adult literacy students. Issues include: (1) why some people have reading and writing problems; (2) how this affects the whole community; and (3) what can the community do about it. The booklet provides further background information on the four projects reviewed in the video. It also provides quotes from the video as a reference to some adult literacy issues and to generate discussion.

The Yeyo program grew out of an identified need of a group of African grandmothers who wished to enrol in a class which specifically targeted grandparents caring for their grandchildren. The Yeyo program is designed to teach the students some basic English vocab and phrases while focussing on ways that they can interact with their young grandchildren to assist their learning. The program uses situations that are common to the experiences of the grandparents - notably, shopping, cooking, storytelling and walking. Around these experiences, the day to day interactions between grandmothers and children occur already. The program uses the context of these familiar interactions to introduce some simple means to extend and reinforce their grandchildren's learning. The Yeyo program consists of a 'Learners' book' (including an illustrated story) and a 'Teachers' book' with 10 suggested lesson plans around those common experiences. As the level of literacy and oracy may be very low, it is vital that the teacher models expected language patterns and encourages repetition and practice. The teaching is emphasising Look Show Talk Involve and Play. While the suggestions are designed for pre-school and early primary school aged children, it is possible to adapt the activities to middle primary years with more complex activities, for example having the child count by twos or backwards and so on.

This material has been developed for use within the module ‘Community Services - Family and Society’, for the Certificate in Community Services (Introductory) held at Tea Tree Gully College of TAFE. The learning package is divided into eight topics: introduction to family and society, factors influencing the functioning of families, family structures and functions over time, family formation, role of the family in developing attitudes and values, gender stereotyping, multiculturalism and cultural variations.
