‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article featured in this issue discusses continuing education and training for the 55 to 64 year-old age group. The European Council aims to see half of this age group in Europe employed by 2010, which issues a challenge for France in which, according to a 2001 study, only 32% of French men and 25% of French women in this age group are still in employment. Education and training initiatives have the potential to boost employment levels for this age group, however access to training currently decreases with age. The discussion indicates that a new approach to lifelong learning is required in order for training opportunities and associated benefits to be realised. Show less

‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article in this issue compares the employment and career advancement possibilities in hotel and catering jobs in France and the US. France and the US have been exchanging expertise in this industry since the 1970s with France exporting its cooking expertise and the US establishing large hotel and catering chains in France and introducing new management methods and approaches to servicing large numbers of guests. Although the industry in France is still dominated mainly by self-run enterprises, the growth in American outlets in France will likely lead to an increase in the share of supervisory, management and marketing functions. In addition, French advances in the constitution of different occupations and hotel management training may also enhance employment prospects for the industry. The article takes a prospective look at employment possibilities, the characteristics of the French hotel and catering industry workforce, and the two training systems (French and American) for a single employment structure. ‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article featured in this issue forecasts labour shortages with the ageing of the labour force, and indicates the need for France’s education and training system to adapt to the needs of business. It is suggested that negative employee and employer reputations, as well as geographic access to the workplace, impact on the suitable supply of human resources. The impact of temporary contracts, wages and representations of work on recruitment are also discussed. Recognition of the disparities between labour supply and demand will contribute to overcoming the recruitment challenges expected in years to come. Show less

‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article featured in this issue examines the supply and demand for human resources in France’s fishing industry. The authors suggest that the industry’s closed system, which functions on rigid employment and labour mobility procedures, contributes to deterring individuals from the profession. The current vocational training system imposes barriers to recruitment and is being forced to incorporate flexibility in order to fulfil the high demand for human resources. Recruitment difficulties are also related to high numbers of early departure from the profession. Barriers to labour market entry must be resolved in order for the industry to overcome recruitment challenges. New pathways of training and recognition of a variety of qualifications will contribute to increasing the supply of human resources. Show less

These dynamics could well lead to radical changes in working and employment conditions in a sector in which the demand for manual labour is very high. This edition addresses the various challenges - including digitalisation, the sector's attractiveness to workers and skill and career management - that French warehouses and logistics platforms are currently having to face.

‘Training & employment’ is a quarterly English-language newsletter aimed at informing the international community about research and other activities undertaken by the Centre for Research on Education, Training and Employment (CEREQ) in France. The article featured in this issue reports on the preservation and enhancement of architectural heritage (historical monuments as well as buildings qualified as ‘non-protected’, ‘vernacular’ or ‘local’) as a market with a future for the building industry. The article reports that the various players involved appear to be too dispersed and isolated to create a skill supply suited to the diversity of the demand. The preservation and enhancement of architectural heritage requires specific skills and qualifications that need to be analysed and defined so that the market is able to structure itself and achieve autonomy within the general building sector.
