Forty [technical and vocational education and training] TVET experts from 17 countries, including Canada, Australia, China, Thailand and Vietnam, discussed ways in which sustainability can be integrated into TVET teacher education and capacity building programmes in the Asia-Pacific region at the meeting ‘International consultation on education for sustainable development: TVET teacher education towards sustainability’. This international experts’ meeting was held on 19-24 August 2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The meeting was organised by UNESCO-UNEVOC with the support of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC), Ministry of Education, Thailand, and in partnership with InWEnt (Bonn), the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) (Bangkok) and the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability, York University (Toronto).

In particular, sustainable business models resulting in the improvement of the quality of local life, sustainable supply chain management, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and development of local sustainable development initiatives could inform educational practices of business schools, training provided by companies, labour unions, [nongovernment organisations] NGOs and other business-related organisations.

What role can education play in the reconstruction process as communities recover and rebuild? How, specifically, can skills training, vocational education and technical learning contribute to this process? What role can [technical and vocational education and training] TVET play in building civic participation as well as building economic livelihoods? [These] are the key questions explored in the most recent issue published in the UNEVOC Discussion Papers Series. This discussion paper is the outcome of the first phase of a research project commissioned by UNESCO-UNEVOC, in partnership with the University of Oxford. The paper conceptualizes a holistic approach to TVET programming and planning in selected post-conflict countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides a review of relevant literature and elaborates the principal theoretical and practical issues shaping the current delivery of TVET in post-conflict countries. The second half of the paper introduces literature-based case studies of education and training arrangements in Liberia, Uganda and southern Sudan.

This publication, jointly published by UNESCO-UNEVOC and Capacity Building International (InWEnt), outlines the principles of action learning as a discipline and explores implications for this approach to teaching in TVET. The seminar on Technical and Vocational Education and Training ‘From School to Work: Contemporary Regional Experiences’ was convened by the National Institute for Educational Policy Research (NIER) of Japan from 23-30 January 2007 in Tokyo. This seminar was co-organised with the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNESCO-UNEVOC), involving members of the Centre’s international network of [technical and vocational education and training] TVET institutions - the so-called UNEVOC Network. The meeting focussed primarily on TVET as a means [for] preparing school leavers for the world of work and on policies and strategies supporting young people through the actual transition process. In line with mandates of NIER and UNESCO-UNEVOC to provide platforms for an international exchange of information and good practice, the seminar served to increase the understanding of contemporary regional experiences of transition to work issues in the Asia-Pacific region. It was attended by 13 representatives of UNEVOC Network member institutions (UNEVOC Centres) from the Asia-Pacific region: Bangladesh, Cambodia, The People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition, NIER had invited two resource persons to give presentations on key issues related to school-to-work in Australia and in the Pacific Island States. Several country case studies on school-to-work transition were presented, different approaches and strategies were discussed, and common concerns and issues related to school-to-work transition were identified during the seminar. Based on these key issues and as an outcome of intensive group work, the participants formulated a set of recommendations for a regional strategy on the improvement of TVET.

As a major contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, InWEnt - Capacity Building International, in partnership with the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training hosted an international experts' meeting in Bonn, Germany on 6-7 November 2007. The purpose of the meeting, titled 'Corporate social responsibility and education for sustainable development: advancing the partnership' was to consider examples and strategies for building global capacity for integrating education, training and capacity building Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in private and public organisations. It also considered how [technical and vocational education and training] TVET systems and institutions can ensure their students enter the workforce with knowledge, skills and aptitudes suitable for working in organisations with a strong CSR orientation. As such, the meeting was a follow-up to an international consultation on 'Education for sustainable development: engaging the corporate sector', also held in Bonn, 23-25 May 2007, and convened by UNESCO-UNEVOC and UNESCO Headquarters Paris, in close partnership with InWEnt and other partners.
