A project to research existing policies and practices relating to recognition of prior learning (RPL) and to develo... Show more
A project to research existing policies and practices relating to recognition of prior learning (RPL) and to develop cross-sectoral national RPL principles and operational guidelines has been commissioned by the Australian Qualifications Advisory Board. In this paper, the authors aim to provide a framework for thinking about RPL and to test their conceptions with the community of researchers present at the conference. They discuss the rationale for the project and suggest a working definition of RPL.

This edition of the UNEVOC Forum provides a snapshot into countries emerging from conflict, examining some of the challenges faced, and vocational training issues to be addressed, when seeking to reintegrate ex-combatants into civilian life. Prolonged conflict damages not only educational structures but also educational relationships and economic livelihoods. Short-term actions by the international community after conflict or disaster often focus on rebuilding educational structures. This Forum provides an update on efforts to rebuild livelihoods and lives through effective educational relationships and reflects on how more learner-focussed processes could lead to improved outcomes.

This publication is the final report from the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) planning meeting held at the Imperial Impala Hotel in Bangkok. The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the Asia region to discuss major issues and concerns for the TVET sector, in order to share challenges and benefit from a collaborative approach. The meeting highlighted six key issues for TVET: (1) access; (2) teachers and other TVET staff; (3) resources; (4) industry linkages; (5) quality; and (6) policy issues. A number of recommendations are listed and possible projects are outlined. At the 2005 UNESCO General Conference, member states stressed the importance of skills development for employability and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a crucially important dimension of Education for All (EFA). It is not only necessary for people to be able to read and write; they also need the skills to make a decent and sustainable living. In light of the above and to fulfil its mandate to assist countries to develop and strengthen education for the changing world of work, the UNESCO International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNESCO-UNEVOC) undertook numerous activities around the world in 2006-2007 in the areas of vocationalisation of secondary education, formal, non-formal and informal TVET, and vocational content in higher education. They included conferences and seminars, study tours, a cutting edge publications program and much more. All activities aimed to contribute to increased opportunities for productive work, sustainable livelihoods, personal empowerment and socioeconomic development, especially for youth, girls, women and the disadvantaged. This report provides full details on the achievements of the Centre during the biennium.
