This report was prepared for the National Center for Research in Vocational Education and the University of California, Berkeley, and supported by the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, US Department of Education. This report documents the second of two studies on teaching and learning generic skills in high school. The initial exploratory study (Stasz et al., 1990) examined the teaching and learning of generic skills in vocational classrooms. The study reported here extends the earlier work by providing a model for designing classroom instruction in both academic and vocational classrooms where teaching generic skills is an instructional goal. The term 'generic skills' in this context means skills in problem solving, communication, teamwork and higher order reasoning, as well as occupational and academic training and education. Show less

This study explores the practices and policies that define reform efforts aimed at integrating academic and vocational education. It describes how eight high schools have attempted to implement integration reforms and examines the implications of their experience for educational policy. Show less
