The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) follow young Australians from the age of 15 up until they are 25, exploring young people's experiences as they leave school, begin post-school study, and enter the workforce. This infographic brings together information from LSAY participants who commenced the program when they were 15 years old in 2015. Using findings from their interviews in 2021, we look at their engagement with study and work and how this has changed over time. We also explore their levels of financial stress, mental health, and satisfaction with life.

This publication provides a snapshot of apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia. It presents statistics on commencements, completions, cancellations and withdrawals and those currently in training. Unless stated otherwise, data are derived from the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection (no. 114, December 2022 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to the delay in time between an event (commencement, completion, etc.) occurring and the reporting of that event to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), NCVER estimates the most recent figures. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. The final counts are those submitted by jurisdictions. Further details on the methodology can be found in the 'Estimation of apprentice and trainee statistics' technical paper [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 100.15].

Care should be taken when comparing 2020 to 2022 data with data from previous years; and (2) In-training figures represent the number of apprenticeship and traineeship training contracts where the apprentice or trainee is actively training under the terms of their contract, and who have not completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their training, or had their training contract expired without meeting all of the prescribed requirements of their program. The figure reflects the number of active contracts at a given point in time (at the end of the quarter), and therefore in-training figures cannot be cumulated over time. For this reason, quarterly comparisons are equivalent to 12-months ending comparisons, as they both represent the changes as at 30 September from one year to the next.

In Australia, there were 402,245 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2022, an increase of 14.0 per cent from 30 September 2021. In the September quarter 2022, compared with the September quarter 2021: commencements decreased by 41.3 per cent, to 29,420; completions increased by 33.4 per cent, to 24,655; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.1 per cent, to 32,950. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2021: commencements increased by 6.1 per cent, to 254,700; completions increased by 20.9 per cent, to 95,300; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 34.3 per cent, to 127,510.

This publication provides a summary of the outcomes of apprentices and trainees aged 18 years or over who completed an apprenticeship or traineeship during 2020. The figures are derived from the 2021 National Student Outcomes Survey. Information is presented on apprentices' and trainees' reasons for training, their employment outcomes, further study outcomes and satisfaction with the apprenticeship or traineeship. An apprentice or trainee is a person who undertakes a contract of training with an employer and a training provider.

The main reason for undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship for those in a trade occupation was because they wanted to work in that type of job (41.5 per cent), up 4.0 percentage points from 2019 and for those in a non-trade occupation was because they wanted to work in that type of job (26.1 per cent), up 6.3 percentage points from 2019. Other key findings include: 94.0 per cent of trade completers were employed after training, up 2.5 percentage points from 2019; 88.4 per cent of non-trade completers were employed after training, up 3.5 percentage points from 2019; 93.0 per cent of trade completers and 91.3 per cent of non-trade completers were satisfied with the skills learnt on the job; and 86.7 per cent of trade completers and 91.0 per cent of non-trade completers were satisfied with their off-the-job training overall.

Impacts of the [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic for training undertaken in 2020 include: 20.2 per cent of trade completers had their on the job training delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic; 30.1 per cent of trade completers had some of their off-the-job training move online; 23.1 per cent of non-trade completers had their on the job training delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic; and 39.2 per cent of non-trade completers had some of their off-the-job training move online.

In Australia, there were 387,830 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 March 2022, an increase of 17.1 per cent from 31 March 2021. In the March quarter 2022, compared with the March quarter 2021: commencements increased by 23.6 per cent, to 85,470; completions increased by 11.5 per cent, to 22,310; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.2 per cent, to 29,870. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2021: commencements increased by 23.7 per cent, to 234,700; completions increased by 15.6 per cent, to 85,470; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 48.2 per cent, to 110,925.

This publication provides a summary of the outcomes of apprentices and trainees aged 15 years or over who completed or cancelled/withdrew from an apprenticeship or traineeship during 2021. This publication refers to these groups as 'completers' and 'non-completers', respectively. The figures are derived from the 2022 National Student Outcomes Survey. Information is presented on apprentices' and trainees' reasons for training, reasons for non-completion, their employment outcomes, further study outcomes and satisfaction with the apprenticeship or traineeship. An apprentice or trainee is a person who undertakes a contract of training with an employer and a training provider.

In total, 14,715 apprentices and trainees responded to the survey, 12,749 completers and 1,966 non-completers. The most common reasons apprentices and trainees undertook an apprenticeship or traineeship were because they wanted to work in that type of job and to gain a recognised qualification or certificate. At the end of May 2022, proportions of those employed after training were: 94.9 per cent of trade completers, similar to 2021; 89.3 per cent of non-trade completers, up 1.7 percentage points from 2021; 84.2 per cent of trade non-completers; and 84.3 per cent of non-trade non-completers.

As reported in 2022, proportions of students satisfied with the skills learnt on the job were: 89.4 per cent of trade completers, down 3.3 percentage points from 2021; 89.5 per cent of non-trade completers, similar to 2021; 78.9 per cent of trade non-completers; and 69.1 per cent of non-trade non-completers.

This publication provides a summary of the outcomes of international students who completed a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification in Australia during 2019 using data collected in mid-2020. These students were surveyed as an additional component to the 2020 National Student Outcomes Survey. Information is presented on international onshore VET qualification completers' reasons for training and their employment outcomes, their satisfaction with training and further study outcomes. Note this group was called 'international onshore VET graduates' in previous years' publications. Overall, 15,521 international onshore VET qualification completers responded to the survey.

Highlights include: 69.0 per cent of international onshore qualification completers undertook training for employment-related reasons, 26.7 per cent for personal reasons, and 4.2 per cent for further study reasons; the main reason for training reported in 2020 was to 'develop or start my own business', up 3.2 percentage points from 2019 while to 'get a job' decreased by 4.5 percentage points from 2019; 87.7 per cent achieved their main reason for training, down 1.1 percentage points from 2019; 53.7 per cent had an improved employment status after training, down 4.0 percentage points from 2019; of those who were employed after training, 68.3 per cent had their hours reduced after the start of the [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic; and 83.7 per cent were satisfied with the overall quality of training, down 0.8 percentage points from 2019.

In Australia, there were 377,665 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 December 2022, an increase of 8.1 per cent from 31 December 2021. In the December quarter 2022, compared with the December quarter 2021: commencements decreased by 33.5 per cent, to 33,745; completions increased by 18.8 per cent, to 32,225; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 1.6 per cent, to 30,095. In the 12 months ending 31 December 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 31 December 2021: commencements increased by 9.9 per cent, to 240,690; completions increased by 19.9 per cent, to 100,245; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 21.4 per cent, to 128,045.

This infographic provides a snapshot of where 23-year-old Australians are at when it comes to their study, work, life at home and satisfaction with life. We compare the latest data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) 2009 commencing cohort, who were 23-years-old in 2017, with those that went before them 10 years earlier to understand how things have changed over time for young Australians making the transition into adulthood.
