Unless stated otherwise, data is derived using the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection no.96, (June 2018 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to lags in processing, the most recent figures are estimated (for training activity from September quarter 2016 to March quarter 2018). The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers, based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. Whereas non-estimated data reflects the actual data submitted by each jurisdiction which is also subject to change. There were 272,440 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 March 2018, a decrease of 1.2 per cent from 31 March 2017. In the March quarter 2018, compared with the March quarter 2017: commencements increased by 1.5 per cent, to 56,015; completions decreased by 9.0 per cent, to 22,425; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 4.0 per cent, to 23,980. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2018, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2017: commencements decreased by 0.9 per cent, to 164,150; completions decreased by 4.6 per cent, to 92,130; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 0.4 per cent, to 92,765.

There were 266,565 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2020, a decrease of 3.9 per cent from 30 June 2019. In the June quarter 2020, compared with the June quarter 2019: commencements decreased by 35.8 per cent, to 21,115; completions decreased by 24.4 per cent, to 14,820; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 28.7 per cent, to 15,120. In the 12 months ending 30 June 2020, compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2019: commencements decreased by 14.2 per cent, to 133,505; completions decreased by 5.7 per cent, to 83,965; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 77,835.

This study explores the relationship between regional people’s identities, their experiences of learning, and engagement with learning. Fifteen adult learners describe those experiences of education and the significant impact of their learning identity on their engagement with learning in the long term. The study was based in a regional area of the Northern Territory and includes people from different age groups and backgrounds including Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, long-term residents and migrants from other places. The participants describe their learning identity as it relates to their identity as individuals and members of local, family and global communities. Show less

In Australia, there were 402,245 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2022, an increase of 14.0 per cent from 30 September 2021. In the September quarter 2022, compared with the September quarter 2021: commencements decreased by 41.3 per cent, to 29,420; completions increased by 33.4 per cent, to 24,655; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.1 per cent, to 32,950. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2021: commencements increased by 6.1 per cent, to 254,700; completions increased by 20.9 per cent, to 95,300; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 34.3 per cent, to 127,510.

This report presents a component of the results from the 1999 national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 which relates specifically to the Northern Territory. This is the first survey of its type, and covers both TAFE graduates and TAFE students who have successfully completed some training and left the TAFE system (module completers). Included with the report are appendices containing explanatory notes, a glossary, a brochure, covering letters and questionnaires. In the March quarter 2021, compared with the March quarter 2020: commencements increased by 35.4 per cent, to 66,635; completions decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 20,010; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 5 per cent, to 22,140. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2021, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2020: commencements increased by 28.5 per cent, to 186,745; completions decreased by 16.8 per cent, to 73,780; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 12.4 per cent, to 73,255.
