In 2022, the 'No Frills' conference theme was 'VET's role in transforming the future'. The vocational education and training (VET) sector has responded well to the [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic, but how can it continue to support Australia's economic recovery and respond to Australia's shifting future skill demands? Presentations were invited to explore issues relating to the ways VET is adapting, anticipating and activating change in response to shifting future skill demands.

'No Frills' is an annual Australian conference where researchers and practitioners in the vocational education and training (VET) sector come together to present, discuss and share information about key issues confronting the sector. It also provides professional development opportunities for new and existing researchers. The 2016 conference program will highlight (but is not limited to) research across three themes: Equity: supporting diversity through promoting inclusive training opportunities for all Australians; Engagement: students, providers, employers and government working together to improve access, participation and outcomes from training; and Evolution: developing a skilled and flexible workforce to adapt to rapid technological change in the workplace, and to improve national competitiveness.

In addition to hearing the findings from national and international research about how governments and communities are working together to help displaced workers transition to new jobs, the program also featured two interactive panel discussions. Speakers from industry, government and training organisations shared insights from successful training and re-skilling initiatives that lead to successful skills transfer and the attainment of jobs, and the role [vocational education and training] VET plays in re-skilling displaced workers and how the sector is preparing for the future.

The 29th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference 'No Frills' was held online for the first time ever on 7-10 July 2020. 'No Frills' is a well-known annual national conference where researchers, practitioners, providers and industry representatives come together and share knowledge, ideas, insights and solutions around Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector. The conference also provides valuable professional development opportunities through a program of hands-on pre-conference workshops or focus sessions incorporating activities on data and research analytics, and research practice.

The theme for the 2020 conference was 'Workforce ready: challenges and opportunities for VET'. The successful transition of an employee from education to job is essential to building a strong economy. But in a world where workplaces are rapidly evolving alongside technology and market demand, what does it mean to be 'workforce ready'? And what is VET's role in preparing students for work? There is much debate over how our future workforce landscapes will look, or what skills our workers will need to be successful at their jobs. However, one thing is clear, almost all workers will need to upskill or retrain throughout their working lives. What challenges and opportunities does this present for VET, and what plans should we be making for the future?
