This publication provides financial data for vocational education and training (VET) in Australia. It includes information on revenues and expenses, assets and liabilities, and cash flows for the 2000 calendar year. Comparisons with 1999 data have been made where possible. Figures are given for the whole of Australia, the individual States and Territories, and for the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA). This financial information is a primary source about how VET in Australia is financed and where the money is spent. The information presented has been extracted from the accrual-based statements prepared by the States, Territories and ANTA on their VET activity.

Since 1992 State and Territory vocational education and training (VET) authorities have provided financial information related to publicly funded VET. This standard is part of the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS). It offers a nationally consistent standard for the collection, reporting and analysis of publicly funded VET information throughout Australia, detailing the financial statements and definitions, the collection guidelines, and the collection arrangements. This report is a review of the literature, available research and current Australian practice relating to work placements. Its purpose is to draw together findings on work placements from three educational sectors in order to inform policy and practice in the Australian vocational education and training (VET) sector. The review has uncovered many gaps in the literature, indicating the need for further research in the VET sector. It is suggested that a major gap is the lack of a scoping study carried out in the school sector. Many critical challenges in work placements are highlighted, such as resourcing, professional development, tensions between workplace and provider cultures, variations in quality of workplace learning environments and equity in access. This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2000 at a TAFE institute in Victoria. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 2000 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. This document contains a summary of the data collected and a brief look at some of the findings from analysis of these data.

This publication contains statistics which reflect the diversity of the Australian vocational education and training (VET) system at the client, provider and program levels. It provides detailed statistical information about publicly-funded VET activity in Australia in 2000, including TAFE, other government providers (for example agricultural colleges and university VET campuses), community providers, some VET delivered in schools, and private providers who have been allocated public funds to deliver VET programs. Data collection is underpinned by Release 3.0 of the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS), which facilitates nationally comparable data and includes a range of data items relevant to the VET system.

Included are the personal characteristics and educational backgrounds of clients, public and private training providers, funding of training, and enrolments by vocational as well as by personal enrichment programs. Data breakdowns by state and territory are given.

The Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) offers a nationally consistent standard for the collection and analysis of vocational education and training (VET) information throughout Australia. This document relates to the AVETMIS Standard for VET providers and contains the following sections: the first section provides an overview of AVETMISS and the national data collection; section two details the file definitions for the AVETMISS data files; section three details field definitions (data dictionary) for fields within the AVETMISS data files; section four provides a standard set of enrolment questions to be asked of clients across the entire sector, to ensure data consistency; section five provides complete classification tables for items not fully described in section three; section six contains a glossary of terms and acronyms relevant to this standard; and section seven contains the appendices. This publication contains statistics on persons undertaking vocational training through contracts of training arrangements (apprenticeships and traineeships) for the period 1 January 2001 to 31 March 2001. It looks at the estimates of apprentices and trainees who were training as at 31 March 2001 and at longer term trends for in-training figures. Estimates for commencements and completions are given.
