This paper summarises the consultations undertaken by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in September and October 2008 to determine the priorities for the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) research program to 2010. The findings in this paper are grouped into three research priority areas: improve the education outcomes of young people by understanding the factors that impact on participation and completion in education and training, especially for those who are disadvantaged; provide young people with the skills, qualifications and capabilities needed for the contemporary labour market by investigating whether the skills from, and pathways through, education and training are well matched with labour market demands; and ensure that young people lead full and meaningful lives by gaining a better insight into the wellbeing and social activities of young people. This report aims to define, quantify and characterise Australian vocational education and training (VET) programs delivered offshore during 2010 by public VET providers. It provides statistical information about the public providers active overseas, the courses they delivered and the students who enrolled in those courses. It builds on data collections covering 2003-09. This collection covers the years 2006-10. Data for 2003-05 can be found by referring to previous collections.

This publication presents estimates of apprentice and trainee activity in Australia for the September quarter 2010. An apprentice or trainee is a person undertaking vocational training through a contracted training arrangement. Highlights of this report include: in the 12 months to 30 September 2010, compared with the previous year, commencements increased by 14.2 per cent to 305 400, completions increased by 4.5 per cent to 166 100 and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 2.9 per cent to 128 600. There were 448 800 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2010, an increase of 5.1 per cent from one year earlier. Show less

This publication presents information about the outcomes for students who completed their government-funded vocational education and training (VET) during 2015. The figures are derived from the National Student Outcomes Survey, which focuses on students' employment outcomes and satisfaction with VET in Australia. Summary information is presented on students' reasons for undertaking training, satisfaction, training benefits, training relevance, further study and employment outcomes. The main reason for not continuing with the training is available for subject completers (students who successfully complete part of a course and then leave the VET system).
Highlights for 2016 are as follows: 85.4 per cent of graduates were employed or enrolled in further study after training, similar to 2015; 74.9 per cent of graduates were employed after training, similar to 2015; 74.4 per cent of subject completers were employed or enrolled in further study after training, similar to 2015; 70.8 per cent of subject completers were employed after training, similar to 2015; 86.1 per cent of graduates were satisfied with the overall quality of their training, similar to 2015; 82.3 per cent of subject completers were satisfied with the overall quality of their training, down 2.3 percentage points from 2015.

This publication presents estimates of apprentices and trainees activity in Australia for the September quarter 2013. There were 421,400 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2013, a decrease of 14.2 per cent from the previous year. In the September quarter 2013, compared with the previous year: commencements increased by 47.6 per cent, to 71,900; completions decreased by 17.6 per cent, to 35,300; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 22.7 per cent, to 28,800.

This publication presents information on VET in Schools, the vocational education and training (VET) undertaken by school students as part of their senior secondary certificate of education. The VET in Schools arrangement offers two main options: students can undertake school-based apprenticeships and traineeships; or they can take VET subjects and courses as part of their school curriculum (the latter is referred to as 'other VET in Schools programs').
In 2019, there were: 235,800 VET in Schools students; 17,100 school-based apprentices and trainees, representing 7.3 per cent of all VET in Schools students; and 218,700 students undertaking other VET in Schools programs, representing 92.7 per cent of all VET in Schools students. In 2019, compared with 2018, VET in Schools students increased by 2.2 per cent. From 2015 to 2019, VET in Schools students decreased by 8.3 per cent.
