The Survey of Employer Use and Views of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) System is currently being reviewed by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). This discussion paper is the first step in the review. It provides a framework for feedback and identifies key issues for consideration. NCVER is seeking input from users to identify their information requirements and how the survey may be modified to better meet their needs. A feedback form has been provided for this purpose. NCVER will consolidate this feedback and report on the outcomes from the discussion paper. A public meeting will be held in mid-2011 to discuss the responses received and our recommendations for future surveys. Show less

A snapshot of vocational education and training (VET) is presented for finance and insurance employers, drawing on findings from the 2007 Survey of Employer Use and Views of the VET System and other sources. The information provided includes contextual information about the industry, a profile of training within the industry, and employers’ use of the VET system and their satisfaction with the training provided. There are individual publications for the other 16 industries featured in the overview.

This report presents the results from the 2002 national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2002. The survey covered TAFE graduates and TAFE module completers.

TAFE graduates were defined as students who attended a TAFE institute in Australia and who completed a Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Associate Diploma, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Bachelors Degree of at least 200 hours or one semester duration, and had an Australian address as their usual address. A questionnaire was sent to a stratified, randomly selected sample of graduates (approximately 42,000 graduates).

TAFE module completers were defined as students who were not graduates, had attended a TAFE institute in Australia and successfully completed some training in a course irrespective of the number of hours of the training, and left the TAFE system. A similar questionnaire to that which was sent to graduates was sent to a stratified, randomly selected sample of module completers (approximately 8,000 module completers).

The information collected in the survey includes: the nature of the training undertaken; the outcomes achieved as a result of completing the training in relation to employment; an indication of whether students were satisfied with the training; and whether students achieved the goals they had set for themselves before commencement. This report presents key results at a national level, giving an overview of the results and exploring the trends that emerge when comparisons are made with previous survey data. This publication presents information from a survey on employers’ use and views of the Australian vocational education and training (VET) system. The survey findings relate to the various ways in which Australian employers use the VET system and unaccredited training to meet their skill needs, and their satisfaction with these methods of training. The publication also looks at the amount of training employers expect to use over the next three years. Show less

This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2000 at a TAFE institute in South Australia. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 2000 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. This document contains a summary of the data collected and a brief look at some of the findings from analysis of these data.

This report presents the results from the national survey of employers with recent vocational education and training (VET) graduates. Employers who contributed to the survey were those with at least one employee who had completed a VET course of at least 200 hours within the previous two years. The purpose of the survey was to gather employers’ views about their satisfaction with VET including the availability, relevance and quality of VET in Australia. A total of 2687 interviews were conducted with employers covering all States and Territories, all industries and employer size categories. The survey adopted an approach to the measurement of satisfaction which enables the gaps between employers’ expectations and the reality of VET service delivery to be clearly identified. The Commonwealth Government’s National Industry Skills Initiative established a series of Working Groups to investigate skills shortages in particular industry sectors. The Electrotechnology Working Group prepared a report on skill shortages in electrotechnology in 2000 (indexed at TD/TNC 67.202) leading to the formulation of an Action Plan to be implemented by an industry Task Force over a period of two years. The plan focuses on three specific projects: a careers project; an employer engagement survey; and a Group Training Targeted Initiative Program. This report has been prepared by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) on the second project for the Electrotechnology Working Group. The report specifically examines the triggers of employer engagement with apprentices in the electrotechnology sector against the background of increasing levels of new apprenticeships. The project involved a literature review, a statistical analysis of trends in industry and new apprentice trends, a qualitative interview phase with firms in the industry, and a survey of employers in the industry. The research revealed that the two key drivers of apprentice employment in this industry are firm size and the availability and/or continuity of work.

This report contains the results for Victoria from the 1998 Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Graduate Destination Survey (GDS), conducted by ACNielsen Research on behalf of the National Centre For Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

Nationally, the survey involved sending a questionnaire to all graduates (120,775) at publicly-funded TAFE institutes in Australia in 1997 who completed a Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration and had an Australian address as their usual address. A total of 66,607 graduates responded, a national response rate of 55.2 per cent. Of the graduates sent a questionnaire, 24,156 were from Victoria and 13.305 responded, a response rate of 55.1 per cent.

The aim of the 1998 TAFE GDS was to measure vocational education and training (VET) graduates' employment outcomes, further study destinations and opinions of courses completed. It provides national, state and institute level data to support the National VET Strategy and information to assist in administration, planning and evaluation.

This report presents a component of the results from the 1999 national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 which relates specifically to Queensland. This is the first survey of its type, and covers both TAFE graduates and TAFE students who have successfully completed some training and left the TAFE system (module completers). Included with the report are appendices containing explanatory notes, a glossary, a brochure, covering letters and questionnaires.
