This third edition of a review and synthesis of research for trade and industrial (T&I) education concentrates primarily on studies reported from 1977 to 1982, including some significant work published since the second edition (1969). Relevant research was identified through searches of the Educational Resources Information Center, the National Technical Information Service, Defense Logistics Studies Information Exchange, and the Dissertation Abstracts International databases. A selective discussion of representative and exemplary studies in the field, the document covers these aspects of T&I: (1) philosophy and scope, (2) student characteristics and needs, (3) curriculum development (i.e., models and frameworks, content determination, affective and transferable skills, and competency-based education), (4) instruction and learning (i.e., systems development, technology, computer-assisted instruction, psychomotor skills, cognitive and affective learning, and youth groups), (5) teacher education, (6) administration, and (7) evaluation. Some relevant technical training research conducted by the U.S. armed forces is also included. A summary of the state of the art, areas for future research, and an extensive bibliography of the cited studies conclude the document.

The authors maintain that effective leadership provided by local vocational administrators is crucial for successful implementation of educational change. They suggest that to effectively lead and move others through the transformation of vocational education, vocational administrators must be ready to approach change in a creative way and establish a climate of opportunity for everyone. This study addresses the leadership effectiveness of vocational administrators as a function of gender and leadership style. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (B. M. Bass & B. J. Avolio, 1991) was used to reveal both self-perceptions of rated effectiveness and leadership style. Show less

In the first section, thirteen professional development themes are presented. Collectively they reflect the comprehensive nature of professional development for school-to-work transition. In the second section, ways to provide school-to-work related professional development to teachers are discussed. Several suggestions for using professional development to help teachers prepare for the school-to-work responsibilities are offered. Show less

This paper is focused on identifying and delineating teachers’ involvement in and contributions to the school-to-work transition. It focuses on what teachers need to conduct successful school-to-work transition efforts. A number of questions were asked. What teacher activities contribute to school-to-work success? What characteristics must teachers have to conduct successful school-to-work programs? Teacher contributions were organised into ten themes that focused on a wide range of school-based, work-based, and linking activities. Twelve themes were identified that reflected characteristics teachers should have to conduct successful school-to-work programs. A matrix is used to reflect how teacher contributions and characteristics interface to identify teachers’ needs. Implications for changes to professional programs are provided. Show less

The improvement of education to prepare students more effectively for the workplace and the skill demands of industry leaders, has been a major focus of educational reform in the United States of America (USA) during the 1990s. Teachers play a central role in the effectiveness of education and any reform efforts must be accompanied by the preparation of teachers to meet future educational challenges. This issue of ‘Centerpoint’ describes three promising professional development approaches investigated by the National Center for Research in Vocational Education (NCRVE): work-based learning; the mini-sabbatical; and, the case study method. The author also examines new teacher roles in relation to the integration of academic and vocational curricula, and participation in school-to-work transition programs, and the professional development strategies that have been effective in preparing teachers for these roles.

This study focuses on the roles of vocational and academic teachers in the integration process, drawing from previous research. Interviews were conducted at school sites. Emerging themes were: cooperative efforts; curriculum strategies; instructional strategies; administrative practices and procedures; student outcomes; teacher outcomes. These themes are described in the report, as well as several unsuccessful attempts at integrating academic and vocational education.
