This journal aims to provide articles which advance our knowledge and understanding of vocational education and training. It concentrates on current or recently completed research, and reviews of research in areas of topical interest. In addition, there are abstracts, book reviews, details of forthcoming events, reports of workshops and letters to the editor. The journal aims to serve the interests of vocational educators, researchers and administrators and has an emphasis on research useful to them in their work.

The articles in this edition of the journal are concerned with learners in vocational education and training, the competency-based training movement and measures to improve the provision of vocational education and training. See TD/TNC 40.10 to TD/TNC 40.16 for individual articles. Show less

The mission of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) is to be Australia's leading provider of quality, independent information on vocational education and training (VET) to governments, the sector, industry, and the community. Its vision is that policy and practice in VET are informed by a sound base of high quality research and analytical evidence. Key highlights for the year include: renewal of the statistical services contract for 2004-05 with the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA); reporting for the first time on school-based apprentices and trainees, apprentices and trainees who were existing workers, and 'traditional apprentices'; providing input into a number of important national reviews; and working with the National Education and Training Statistics Unit within the Australian Bureau of Statistics to review the adequacy of statistical collections in the VET sector. ‘Insight’ is a quarterly newsletter published by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) to provide news and information on vocational education and training (VET) research and statistics. The articles in this issue include: Value of qualifications changes with the times; Market reform produces a mixed outcome; Employers to have their say about VET; Equity takes a positive course in VET; RPL can build on a solid foundation; NCVER research forums; NCVER assists research strategy for Indigenous students; Measuring the effectiveness of VET. These brief articles provide information about recent research projects and new and forthcoming publications. The mission of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) is to be Australia's leading provider of quality, independent information relating to vocational education and training (VET) to governments, the sector, industry and the community. Its vision is for policy and practice in VET to be based on sound evidence. Key highlights for this year include: developing a strategy for obtaining information about all recognised training activity, not just activity in the public VET sector and presenting it to the National Training Statistics Committee (NTSC); developing a survey of Indigenous VET students in conjunction with an advisory group representing key stakeholders; and reviewing the content and methodology for the Survey of Employer Views to be conducted in the second half of 2004. The 29th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference 'No Frills' was held online for the first time ever on 7-10 July 2020. 'No Frills' is a well-known annual national conference where researchers, practitioners, providers and industry representatives come together and share knowledge, ideas, insights and solutions around Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector. The conference also provides valuable professional development opportunities through a program of hands-on pre-conference workshops or focus sessions incorporating activities on data and research analytics, and research practice.

The theme for the 2020 conference was 'Workforce ready: challenges and opportunities for VET'. The successful transition of an employee from education to job is essential to building a strong economy. But in a world where workplaces are rapidly evolving alongside technology and market demand, what does it mean to be 'workforce ready'? And what is VET's role in preparing students for work? There is much debate over how our future workforce landscapes will look, or what skills our workers will need to be successful at their jobs. However, one thing is clear, almost all workers will need to upskill or retrain throughout their working lives. What challenges and opportunities does this present for VET, and what plans should we be making for the future?

This publication is a collection of summaries of all research projects published or completed by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in 2004. It is the first year such a product has been produced by NCVER. The summaries are clustered under the five broad themes used by NCVER to organise all of its VET research and analysis. The five themes are: Industry and employers; Students and individuals; Teaching and learning; VET system; and VET in context. Fifty-six pieces of work are included and each summary provides an abstract of the research project, highlights of the findings and details of how to access the full research reports.
