This assessment guide is designed to help workers in correctional services who wish to be assessed for the Certificate III in Correctional Practice. For the purpose of assessment, units which cover similar functions and tasks have been clustered to help make the assessment closely relate to real work requirements. These are called key roles. There are four key roles for the Certificate III in Correctional Practice: (1) Contributing to an effective organisation; (2) Communication; (3) Safety and security; and (4) Offender management. This booklet covers the key role of Communication and contains the following core and optional units: CSC040: Communicate effectively; CSC050: Manage direct contact (interview) to gather and provide information; CSC060: Prepare and present reports; PS0127/20: Implement effective communication techniques; CSC210: Report to a formal inquiry.

The strategy analyses economic, industrial and social forces for change and their implications for vocational education and training over the next five years. It sets out a vision for VET, aligned with five key objectives. These objectives are: (1) equipping Australians for the world of work; (2) enhancing mobility in the labour market; (3) achieving equitable outcomes in VET; (4) increasing investment in training; and (5) maximising the value of public vocational education and training expenditure. In particular ANTA is developing an approach to access and equity and strategies for increasing participation and achieving equity of training outcomes as part of the re-development of the National Strategy for Vocational Education and Training.

Under the current arrangements, individuals in the building and construction industry can be assessed to gain recognition of competencies achieved in two different ways: by completing a structured training course with a training provider and by gaining recognition of competencies achieved through work experience and/or workplace training. However, there is no mutual recognition of the outcomes of the two systems. This publication presents an analysis of data on training package activity undertaken by vocational education and training (VET) students in Australia, including apprentices and trainees, in the year to 31 December 2002. It also identifies major changes in activity over the past five years.
Training packages were introduced into the vocational education and training sector in the mid-1990s. Developed by industry, they consist of a set of nationally endorsed standards, guidelines and qualifications for training, recognising and assessing skills. Since their implementation, the number of individuals studying towards a training package qualification has increased significantly. The implementation in 1998 of the New Apprenticeships system, aimed at providing apprenticeship and traineeship training in a greater number of industry areas has contributed substantially to this rise.
The analysis found that females dominated the early uptake of training package qualifications as the first packages to roll-out were in business administration, hospitality and retail, traditionally female-dominated areas. As a wider variety of qualifications became available across other industry areas, the numbers of males and females began to even out and are now roughly equal.
It was also found that young people under 25 years of age, and in particular teenagers, are more likely to undertake a training package qualification than either an accredited course or a subject-only qualification. The reverse is true for those aged 25 years or over. By 2002, enrolments associated with training packages accounted for 42% of all VET enrolments.
When New Apprenticeships were introduced in 1998, only 32% of apprentices and trainees were undertaking a national training package qualification. By 2002, this figure had increased to 84%. Show less

This comprehensive study projects the tourism and hospitality industry's needs for the future and provides valuable information for industry and training organisations. The study was jointly managed by Tourism Training Australia (TTA) and major industry organisations. The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and Tourism Potential Pty Ltd undertook the study on the behalf of TTA. The study provides an analysis of the tourism labour market in 1996 with particular focus on 11 key target occupations identified by TTA. The study then examines the tourism industry and employment growth potential from 1995-2000 and from 1995-2020, and identifies possible imbalances in the supply and demand for critical occupations, and training issues. It recommends training strategies for issues including language and cultural skills, migration and tourism training, entry level training, and a training policy move towards trades and away from tertiary programs in tourism management. The study then develops three scenarios for tourism growth to 2020; low, medium and high growth, and explores their implications for tourism training. The report contains extensive statistical data.
